Ramblings of a Stay at Home Mom!

A View From The Pew: I Believe In You!

Today was Pastor Todd’s first week back since his summer break. So that was cool. He did a sermon on things he believes to be true for everyone. It was interesting.

He talked of not being afraid of God’s plans for us. I think often a lot of us are afraid, or perhaps more so we don’t like giving up the control we think we have over life. But we need to give up that control to be able to reach our full potential and also be fully happy. Sadly I think that’s easier said than done.

Most of the time we want to know it all and know it now. I think this is typical of most people. It seems to be very common among our younger generations as well. That’s a whole other post which really has nothing to do with the sermon. But yeah sometimes we just have to accept that it isn’t all known to us and that we’ll have to wait to see what we get.

Once again for me it seemed the sermon came back to personal responsibility. Taking responsibility to make changes as needed. Taking responsibility to live properly. It’s always about being responsible.

What I found most interesting is Pastor Todd says we all need a hobby. We all need to be more than what we think we are. For instance I’m not just a mom. I’m a writer and a photographer and that’s okay. No matter what people want to say or think, having outside things, that don’t involve your main function in life, is good for you. Some people are of the belief that if you’re a mother you can’t spend time doing things outside of being a mother. That 100% of your time must be focused on your children.

Now I agree that the bulk of our time should be focused on our children. We don’t get the luxury of going out to party (not that I ever really did that). We don’t get the luxury of being too spontaneous but we can give ourselves a little free time, something outside of being a parent. It keeps us sane and keeps us from stressing too much.

I just thought it was interesting how somehow this weeks sermons tied into the actions and judgements of others that have been going on this week. These women who call themselves Christians but then act in such a manner that makes you wonder. But that’s all I’m going to do is wonder.

Following Directions

Mommy is not so good with following the directions. We went to Lowes to build a bus (that was this weeks activity). Well I didn’t follow the directions so I accidentally did it wrong. LOL! What I typically do is put the nails in and Kaylee hammers them into place. She gets bored fast so I often have to finish up the project. It’s cool, I enjoy doing it.

So we came home and I had to pull out the tools to fix it. Luckily we had wood glue so I could finish it even though I did it wrong. Here’s Kaylee with the finished product!

Diazoxide (Progylcem)

I received this comment on another post. I’m not sure if it’s just a statement of fact (because it is true) or if it’s meant to be a dig at Kaylee but it prompted me to write a post to explain why it is that my oldest is hairy.

Becky wrote:

That’s one hairy child (the older one)! Dang!

Kaylee has a disorder caused by a genetic defect called Hyperinsulinism. Simply put she produces too much Insulin. I thought I had written something up on her disorder before but apparently not. I did write an article about it for Associated Content and it can be viewed at the link below.

Living with a Child Who Has a Medical Disorder
In late October 2006 Kaylee Ott was diagnosed with Hyperinsulinism, which is a genetic disorder, which causes the pancreas to produce too much Insulin, which can lead to low blood glucose levels, which causes seizures, brain damage and sometimes death.

Kaylee’s blood sugar is maintained with one medication, Diazoxide. Side effects of Diazoxide are:

The main side effects are initially fluid retention (increased swelling of the feet, hands, and face), increased weight gain from excessive water being stored in the body and in small infants, this can cause heart failure due to fluid overload.

A later side effect is the increased growth of hair on the body including not only the head, but also on the face, arms, legs, and back. This is not a sexual type of hair (pubic hair or underarm hair), but rather an increase in the normal body hair found in all infants and children.

We do find Kaylee’s excessive hair growth to be a problem. Mainly because the kids at her school call her dirty. And it’s not to say that they’re being rude, her hair is dark and thus she looks dirty and little ones don’t know to not say things. But Kaylee has recognized that her hair growth isn’t normal. She says it makes her a boy so that bothers her.

So what do we do about it? As recommended by her doctor, because I rarely do anything without clearing it with her doctor, we trim her hair off. We don’t shave her, I find that to be too extreme. We use a woman’s eyebrow trimmer. This is safest in my opinion because it can’t cut her and involves no pain. Plus with a trimmer you don’t have to deal with course hair.

Once a month we trim her hair. It’s been more this summer because hair tends to grow faster in the summer. We have to trim every part of her body. Although the drug information says it should only happen in certain areas, this is not so. It happens all over her body. We’re lucky though since she’s on a low dose of the medication it’s not as bad as it can be. I’ve seen babies on Diazoxide that have hair that is really long and makes them look like they have that disorder where you look like a wolf person.

It’s something we need to do sadly because of her disorder. It’s a part of life though. It’s sad that people comment on it though. What can you do? Luckily Kaylee’s too young to recognize people’s harshness.

On a side note I felt it appropriate to address the comment because well certain folks are going to be angry to see that comment and might reply nastily and I figured Becky or anyone who wants to make comments would like to know why certain folks are going to be nasty about it.

Annabelle Stats

Why didn’t you all tell me I forgot to post Annabelle’s stats on Wednesday after her 2 month appointment? Gees.

She took the shots well. I mean she was angry of course but took them like a pro. It became apparent that Annabelle will not be the kind of baby Kaylee was in regards to shots. Kaylee didn’t care as an infant. Never cried. Annabelle started crying the minute she was touched with the alcohol wipe! Of course Kaylee was sick and by the time she was well enough to be aware of shots, she’d been poked and prodded with needles so much that she really just didn’t care anymore. Annabelle will probably cry every time.

So on to her check up. The doctor isn’t too concerned about her birthmarks. To be honest I’m a bit optimistic that they’ve stopped growing because the one on her arm is already changing color to a darker purple and from what I read, when it starts to turn to the darker purples it’s done growing. So that’s good. The one on her neck is still bright red but hasn’t really grown in the last few weeks so I’m not worried. The doctor said they’ll go away anyhow in the next few years. Her marks on her forehead, which I rarely notice, he said will probably fade by 1 year. They were more bright at the office but she was angry and a bit cold so they showed up more.

She’s apparently eating normally which is great. I still don’t know to this day what exactly is normal and what isn’t. The doctor started talking about solids! Already. Seriously. He said at 4 months I can get her one small spoon full of formula-diluted rice cereal and then increase weekly. I don’t think we officially got Kaylee on solids until she was six months old. She was not interested in doing it until then. But this baby probably will be different. We can introduce yellow veggies around six months, well that’s my plan cause I think he said we could do it earlier if we wanted.

Now onto her stats:

Weight: 10lbs 13oz (up over 2lbs from birth) 50%

Height: 22.5 inches (up 2 inches since birth) 50%

Head: 15.5 inches (up 1 inch since birth) 69%
